Minneapolis Portraits | Loring Park Photographer
It occasionally happens during a portrait session that the photographer goes quiet. Slowly arranging the composition in his mind, the subject slips in and out of a few poses, while he or she selectively snaps away. These kinds of moment occur like magic. There's total trust between the photographer and the subject. The person in front of the camera feels beautiful, confident, taken care of. And from there we take risks. We make subtle changes within the frame to reveal new emotion, more depth, a sense of wonder or mystery. As a photographer, I love these moments. Though I seldom go totally quiet unless I really know someone (too much room for self-doubt from the subject), I strive to find these moments of trust. When I have found them, they seem to magically appear and they are much prized. Shooting in Loring Park one weekend, Agnes and I found our groove and got those amazing shots that come when there's trust. It was a great session.
I used a few different types of film for this session - Kodak Portra 160, Kodak Portra 400 and Kodak Ektar 100. I was especially impressed by the qualities of the Ektar, which produced subtle maroon undertones to the shadows and vibrant portrait colors. I found it to be a very moody and effective film for midday shooting, particularly when there's a lot of sunlight. The only thing is I had to de-redden the skin tones slightly in some of the shots as it has a tendency to create slightly more pinkish skin tones, particularly in fair skinned people. Yeah, not too flattering. You can find a great article which goes into more details on shooting with Kodak Ektar here on photographer Steve Huff's site.
Loring Park is a great place for Engagement and portrait photos. Not only is there a variety of scenic locations (a beautifully kept garden, a picturesque pond and marsh filled with ducklings and geese, a bridge, countless trees), but the area also gets wonderful light. I've noticed that the summer sunsets in this park are especially wonderful and the area has a great golden hour.
