MINNESOTA NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY
a look at a recent serene newborn's shoot for one of minneapolis' top wedding planners
I was looking forward to this shoot with Jenn, one of the co-founders of the wonderful Rosetree Events, based in Minneapolis. I haven't done too many newborn shoots, but I'm always up for the challenge. I also had a pretty clear idea in mind of how the shots should look. Ultimately, it was a great chance to work with Jenn and her family and to capture some of these first moments in the life of their one-month old.
GOING WITH THE FLOW
One thing I learned on this shoot is that you really have to learn to go with the flow when working with newborns! They may seem docile and quiet before you come, but I think they have a sixth sense for photographers because as soon as you walk into the room, they can sense the energy of the camera. Jenn kept noting how quiet her baby typically was - until the shoot! And so taking mini-breaks and letting the baby nap or feed are integral to a happy shoot. And whenever you see a good shot, much like weddings, take it because it won't last for long.
This goes not just for newborn photos, but any editorial photos for that matter: learn to step back. Seeing the bigger picture is important in any editorial shoot. So often we get caught up in the minutiae of close-ups that we forget the beautiful details of the full frame picture. I love to frame subjects in nature, as we did above.
KEEP YOUR BACKDROPS MINIMAL
I was very choosy about the backdrops for these shots with baby Rosen. Color and minimal backdrops play a huge part in creating a pleasing frame. For this shoot I wanted something soft and light; something that would complement the pale pink tutu she was wearing. The shot above fit the bill for me - we simply set the baby against a cream-colored pillow with minimal design.
All in all, it was a fun shoot. Shooting in natural light is such a perfect mode for things like weddings and newborns. Ultimately you're producing legacy pictures, something that the couple or family is going to come back to for generations to come. As a photographer, I consider it a huge honor to be able to capture these milestone moments in people's lives.
