MARIAM + ABDUL

AN EARLY SUMMER LAKESIDE WEDDING

Lilacs always remind of my childhood, of June and the beginning of summer.  Their strong and sweet floral scent always signal those memories of school being out, of celebration, and laughter and joy amongst my childhood friends.  And so it was such a pleasure to see both lilacs and children and raucous joy play such distinct roles in Mariam and Abdul's wedding.  You can see it in the pictures - in how the beautiful lush backdrop of lilacs complements Mariam's bridal glow.  Also in how much joy and carefree happiness the kids brought to the collection.  Kids usually love the camera, by the way.  The scenic environment was enhanced by the beauty of Lake Minnetonka on the back lawn of the Bayview Event Center, where the wedding occurred.  This wedding was unique in that it was a wedding that honored the traditions within Somali culture.  So there was no formal ceremony on the day of the wedding, but there was much good cheer and celebration culminating in one  of the best dance periods at wedding reception.  Dressed in a stunning Che Bella boutique gown, complete with a birdcage veil and gorgeously intricate henna designs on her and her bridesmaids hands, Mariam was every bit the beaming bride on her wedding, as Abdul looked fondly at her.  Holding her vibrant early summer bouquet marvelously designed by Luna Vinca, It was one of the magical summer days with a molten warm sunset.  It was all these elements of scent and sound, love and light, that made Mariam & Abdul's so remarkable - one of those perfect early summer days.

DEREK + JEN

A CHIC SUMMER WEDDING AT TWO OF THE MOST CHARMING & INTIMATE VENUES IN MINNEAPOLIS

Sometimes upon meeting couples I get the feeling that they might have known each other for a few centuries.  I got that feeling when I met Derek and Jen, as they completed each other sentences, complemented each other's movements, and seemed so synchronized in glance, spoken word and touch.  You could see it on their wedding day, when the bride approached the groom for that first look.  Perhaps because it's the season we most associate with weddings, a summer wedding can bring about the feeling that we're seeing a wedding the way we imagined it as kids, when we dreamed of what that would be like and if we would ever find our perfect match.  In the picturesque Bakken Museum garden, I am sure many of the friends and family revisited that original sense of childhood wonder, as the bride made her way down the aisle towards her beloved.

COURTNEY + MICHAEL

AN UPSCALE RUSTIC DESTINATION WEDDING WITH STUNNING DETAILS & CONTEMPORARY FLAIR.

Sometimes the entire wedding day can go by like a dream of a feast, with course after course besting the last, until all you are left with is laughter, mirth and wide-eyed joy. This was the experience of Courtney and Michael's wedding day, where gaiety and autumn swagger paired up to provide that perfect blend of masculine and feminine, lush and autumnal, and continual harmony - all of which the best weddings seem to have.  Here tucked in the dense forestry just miles below Portland, Maine, is the Hidden Pond Resort, where this magical wedding unraveled amongst a tightly knit gathering of Courtney and Michael's closest family & friends.

MINNESOTA BARN WEDDING

ELK RIVER, MN

SOPHIA + NICOLAS

A LARGE CLASSIC WEDDING AT THE RUSTIC FARM OF A FAMILY FRIEND

The call of rustic countryside can prove a harmonious wedding location for many Minnesotan couples.  So many of us having grown up near endless rolling prairieside speckled with horses, cows and geese.  Sophia and Nicolas, both outdoors types, chose the barn site of a family friend.  One of the most synchronized ceremonies I've seen, right outside in front of acres of green pasture, the sun peered out in striking rays through the clouds just as they got to their vows.  It was a welcome appearance on a day that was filled with so many subtle and special acts of love.

THE ENCHANTED BARN

HILLSDALE, WISCONSIN

SARAH + PAUL

 A RUSTIC AUTUMN BARN WEDDING

The pale colors of late autumn can create a faded but dense sense of nostalgia, which permeates every gesture and smile on a brisk late October wedding day.  Here Sarah and Paul were, surrounded by family and friends at the vintage charm of the Enchanted Barn in Wisconsin, just as winter was about to descend with all the associated comforts.  One thing you notice is their comfort with each other, the ease with which she walks with him through the field during golden hour, their mutual support against the soft tapestry of the life before them.

RIUM RIVER BARN & VINEYARD

HILLMAN, MINNESOTA

PHOEBE + MATT

A SUNSOAKED AUTUMN MINNESOTA VINEYARD WEDDING

Together Phoebe and Matt complement each other well.  Both comic actors, their jokes swing in and out of the conversations, switching from witty observations to subtle punchlines.  When we first started planning how I'd be shooting their wedding, a movie came up - Terrence Malick's screen poem "Days of Heaven".  They wanted the photography to have the sweeping poetry and candid vigor of Malick's expertly shot cinematography gem.  Having a sense of what they meant, and having seen the film, I plotted & sketched out some compositions.  But it didn't quite click until we got there to there that epic MN barn wedding; to that field with a blazing orange sunset.  So much of wedding photography is juggling chance and preparedness.  You have to be ready at the right time and everyone has to be feeling that moment.  That moment happened when the entire wedding party, unplanned, walked out into the field for an impromptu photo session that almost felt like a fashion editorial.

LITTLE FALLS BALLROOM

LITTLE FALLS, MINNESOTA

GABRIELLE + JORDAN

A SMALL TOWN MINNESOTA TRADITIONAL WEDDING

The small town where you grew up can remind you of a lot things.  It can be that place where you lost your self as a child, playing hide & seek with friends, or going strawberry picking with your grandparents.  It is the place with all the firsts:  where you first learned to drive, first kiss, first school dance. And so it was with the fond recollection of that small town that Gabrielle and Jordan chose to host their wedding in the place where they grew up.  Having grown up in central Minnesota myself, I recognized the vibe of Little Falls.  There's the Main Street with the tall brick church, the ballroom where so many families go for Sunday chicken dinners.  These little charming qualities of everyday life are familiar bonds that all of their guests have experienced.  It's the place where so many moments have been shared between members of the whole town.  That's the charm of a place like this, where everyone know everyone.  And  on that wonderful day when Gabrielle & Jordan got married so many of them came to celebrate their union.

CAMROSE HILL FLOWER FARM

STILLWATER, MINNESOTA

ELENA + ALEX

A MAGICAL SUMMER WEDDING AT A DIVERSE FLOWER FARM VENUE

Young love can be a beautiful thing, like a finely paired tawny with a June wedding.  The adjective I would use to describe Elena and Alex's would be magical.  First off, Camrose Hill Flower Farm is that kind of place.  Bestrewn with hidden groves, and charming trails, dazzling scents of hyacinth and peonies populating the clear air, one gets that stopped-in-time sense when a ceremony is held here, as if it is the most important place  in the world.  And for the couple and their loved one in that moment, it is.  Thus, for a young couple like Elena and Alex to say their vows on such a beautiful summer's day, the environment itself seems to match their spirits.  The caress of whimsical merriment touches everyone's soul in this place.  And then there's that moment during First Dance, when you realize that this is how you imagined it when you thought about getting married when you were just a kid, this is how you dreamt it would be.

ROSENWOOD BARN

HAM LAKE, MINNESOTA

JESS + JEREMY

A WHIMSICAL MID-SUMMER MINNESOTA BARN WEDDING

Merriment, the word, carries the unstifled joy of childhood into the realm of adulthood.  Somewhat zany, the word holds the sights and sounds of play from those early years, filled with gumballs and hot pink balloon tattoos.  It's a little of that sportive feeling you might find in a Wes Anderson film.  The feeling of unbridled play.  That merriment is what Jess and Jeremy strived for at their wedding.  It's the gift they wanted to give their guests.  That sort of magic was certainly display as Jess & Jeremy exchanged their vows.  Not even the drops of rain could dampen their spirits, as eventually the sun peered through as warm orange-pink haze that embraced the farm and it's red barn, surrounded by yard games and guests with good cheer.
